The Price That Is Not the Price

A 10-BBL brewhouse is quoted at $180,000. After factoring in the boiler, the glycol chiller, the water treatment skid, and the installation contractor, the total project cost climbs past $350,000. That gap between advertised equipment pricing and real-world investment is where most first-time brewery owners get caught off guard.

The same math applies to fermentation tanks. A tank that looks like a bargain at auction often becomes expensive once you factor in shipping, rigging, installation, and the repairs it needs before it can hold beer.

The Used Equipment Trap

With brewery closures and shifting market conditions creating more opportunities in the used-equipment market, many brewers are asking the same question. Used equipment can stretch a startup or expansion budget a long way. But the winning bid is only the beginning.

Common pitfalls include technology mismatch, missing automation support, unreliable maintenance history, access and footprint issues, rigging surprises, and hidden refurbishment costs. A tank bought cheaply several states away still has to cross every mile between the auction floor and your production space.

The Real Cost of Owning Equipment

The real cost of owning brewing equipment shows up in shipping, customs clearance, installation labor, commissioning delays, and ongoing operational expenses. A small craft system in North America can cost 30% more than the equivalent system shipped from a Chinese fabricator, but the tradeoff often shows up in lead time and documentation quality.

What the price does not show:

Installation. A brewhouse without a properly matched CIP station produces dirty beer. Tanks without adequate glycol cooling produce off-flavors. Controls without voltage configuration produce dead panels.

Commissioning. The containers arrived with a brewhouse and tanks, but no CIP station. That “turnkey” system took three months of retrofitting before producing beer.

Ongoing costs. Energy, maintenance, spare parts, and labor all add up. A system that saves you $40,000 upfront can easily cost you $200,000 more over its life.

What to Look For in a Fermentation Tank

Pressure rating. A fermentation tank should have a design pressure of 0.2 MPa and a test pressure of 0.3 MPa. Those numbers are specific enough to check against a spec sheet before you buy.

Material. Grade 304 or 316L stainless steel remains the industry standard, offering 3 to 5 times longer lifespan than plastic alternatives (15-20 years versus 5-7 years).

Cooling jacket. The glycol jacket design determines how evenly the tank cools. Dimple jackets, half-pipe jackets, and full-coverage jackets all perform differently. For precise lager fermentation, full-coverage jackets are essential.

Customization. A customizable tank can include extra cooling zones on the upper shell, the cone, and even a dedicated collar jacket for the headspace. One Colorado brewery that moved to a custom fermentation tank with three independent dimpled cooling jackets saw their temperature variance drop from ±2.2°F to ±0.4°F across a 15-barrel batch.

The Supplier Question

When evaluating a fermentation tank supplier, ask:

What is the pressure rating? What is the test pressure?

What stainless steel grade do you use? Can you provide material certificates?

What is the interior surface finish? (Ra 0.4 μm or better is the target.)

What welding method do you use? (Orbital TIG welding is the industry standard.)

Can you provide references from other breweries at my scale?

A supplier who cannot answer these questions is not ready to support your project. A supplier who answers them with specific, detailed responses has done this before and knows what they are doing.
